Hayuta and Berl
Hayuta and Berl (2012)
Aging is a daily tragedy that cinema makes visible and transforms into a cathartic spectacle. Until this year’s Palm D’Or winner Love by Michael Haneke, such classics as Umberto D by Vittorio Da Sica or The Ballad of Narayama by Keisuke Kinoshita, used to picture old people at the precise time when they realized they were no longer needed. In this film, Hayuta and Berl, an elderly couple, find it hard to adjust to today’s Israel and to the social changes surrounding them. Over the course of a painful night of disillusionment, the two decide to leave their apartment for one last journey. A difficult topic even for an experienced screenwriter and director. However, Amir Manor, in his debut film, managed, on a small space and with the use of simple directing solutions, with two great actors, to make a movie that is moving, poetical and humorous at the same time.

Oh Boy!
Oh Boy! (2012)
Comedy, Drama
Niko, the Boy, lives in Berlin, has no job, is an unsuccessful student, has a girlfriend whom he is not interested in, and has a rich father who occasionally helps him. On the day during which the plot of the film takes place, Niko seems unable to do anything right. It is yet another lost day, without any greater meaning, a day in which nothing indicates the next day or those after it will be different. He accepts all these more or less gray facts of his life with a dose of irony and self-irony, because that way everything becomes more bearable and somehow a ‘normal’ status quo is introduced in his petty life.

The Company You Keep
The Company You Keep (2012)
Thriller
Jim Grant (Robert Redford) is a recently widowed single father and former Weather Underground militant wanted for a 1970s Michigan bank robbery and murder of the bank's security guard. He has been in hiding from the FBI for over thirty years as an attorney near Albany, New York. When former Weather Underground member Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon) is arrested, Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf), an ambitious young reporter, smells an opportunity to make a name for himself with a national story. His prickly editor, Ray Fuller (Stanley Tucci), assigns him the case. Ben asks his ex-girlfriend and FBI agent, Diana (Anna Kendrick), for information about the case and learns Sharon came to town to visit Billy Cusimano (Stephen Root), an old hippie who runs an organic grocery. Billy mentions the arrest to his friend and attorney Jim, who doesn't want to take Sharon's case and conveys this information to Ben when questioned. Ben pursues Jim and unsuccessfully attempts to question him. Spooked by the federal investigation, Jim takes his 11-year-old daughter, Isabel (Jackie Evancho) on "a little trip" to New York. A private investigator tells Ben that Jim had no social security number prior to 1979 and is actually Nick Sloan, a former Weatherman. The manhunt for Jim/Nick becomes national news. After sight-seeing and checking into a fancy hotel, Jim/Nick leaves a sleeping Isabel and the room key hidden in the hotel lobby for his brother, Daniel Sloan (Chris Cooper). FBI agents, including Diana's boss Cornelius (Terrence Howard), chase Jim/Nick, who creates a diversion and escapes. Since Ben's information was helpful, Cornelius allows him to interview Sharon. She reveals that Nick and Mimi once had a love affair. In California, Mimi Lurie (Julie Christie), a Weather Underground accomplice, imports marijuana into the U.S. aboard a yacht. Mac McLeod (Sam Elliott), Mimi's boyfriend and boss in the drug trade, mentions the manhunt. Jim/Nick goes to Milwaukee to find Donal (Nick Nolte), his old best friend who tells him to contact former member and history professor Jed Lewis (Richard Jenkins), to find Mimi. Jim initially refuses to help Jim, but uses his connections with their old radical friends to reach Mac, who informs Jim/Nick that Mimi was there, but left to go inland. Ben begins to feel that Jim/Nick's actions make no sense for a guilty man. He flies to Michigan to investigate the original crime. He meets with retired cop, Henry Osborne (Brendan Gleeson), who was the first person to investigate the robbery. Osborne refuses to talk in front of his wife and adopted child, Rebecca (Brit Marling). Ben learns of Linder-Lurie company property near Canada. Osborne gives insight to Ben that if Mimi comes forward with the truth that Jim/Nick wasn't even at the robbery, Jim/Nick can be cleared of all charges. Rebecca learns her true parentage from Osbourne around the same time Ben does. Jim/Nick and Mimi meet at the cabin near Canada and rekindle old passions. Mimi reveals that she saw their daughter in Ann Arbor, a beautiful young woman now. Jim/Nick wants Mimi to turn herself in, but she refuses, based on her political convictions. Jim/Nick tells her that life has changed. Mimi goes on the run again. Jim/Nick says he has no more secrets and it is up to Ben whether he wants to keep the secret. Jim/Nick goes on the run so the feds can chase him instead of Mimi. Cornelius and Osborne catch Jim. Mimi turns her boat around and gives herself up. Jim is freed and reunites with Isabel. Ben decides not to expose Rebecca's true identity.
